I am the newest project manager here, which means that I do not get to lean on having seen it all before. Early on I decided that this was not really the disadvantage that everybody assumed it was. Experience is a shortcut, and shortcuts are where a lot of the mistakes on a job site actually come from. So I check the thing. I go and measure it again myself. I read the plan a second time before the crew shows up, instead of reading it after they have already started building from it. Nobody has ever complained to me that I was being too thorough with their own house.
The other half of it is that I ask. If something on your house sits outside of what I know cold, I will say so, and then I will have you an answer the same day, usually from somebody here who has been doing this a lot longer than I have. What I will not do is guess in front of you and then quietly hope that it all holds up. You will also see me on your project more often than you are probably expecting, because I would much rather be standing there when a question comes up than hear about it on the phone three days later.
How I work
No shortcuts, because I have none
I measure it again, I read the plan twice, and I verify the thing everyone else already assumes. That is not inexperience, it is the method.
I will tell you I do not know
Then I get you the real answer the same day, usually from somebody here who has been doing this since before I started.
On site more than expected
I would rather be standing in your house when a question comes up than take a phone call about it three days later.
