Growing up, things in our house got patched instead of fixed. Not because nobody cared, but because doing it properly cost money we did not have that month, so the same problem came back around the next year and we handled it the same way all over again. I did not think much about any of it at the time. I think about it constantly now, because I sit across from homeowners doing that exact same arithmetic in their head, and I know what it feels like from the other side of that kitchen table.
So I would rather see one part of your house done properly than three parts of it done cheaply. If the budget only reaches so far, then I will tell you which piece to put it toward and which piece can honestly wait another year or two, and I am not going to dress up the cheaper option as something that it is not. I also do not treat a smaller project as a smaller job, or the person who is paying for it as a smaller client. The homeowners who can only afford the one thing this year are usually the ones who remember exactly how they were treated, and that has stayed true for me on both sides of it.
