I managed projects in the Army before I ever managed one on somebody's house. Different work entirely, same lesson, and it got taught to me early and often: the person in charge owns the outcome. Not the plan, not the conditions, not the guy who was supposed to deliver something on Tuesday and then did not. You. The other half of it was that a plan is only ever worth what it actually does on the day that it breaks, so you build the backup for it long before anyone needs to go and use one. That habit does not leave you when you take the uniform off.
So you will not hear me explain a problem on your house by pointing at somebody else. If a material showed up late, then I should have ordered it sooner. If a crew was not ready to start, then that was mine to sort out before they ever pulled up out front. I will tell you what happened, what it changes, and what I am already doing about it, and none of that is going to sound like an excuse to you, because it is not one. Homeowners hear a lot of blame during a renovation. I have always thought they should be hearing a plan instead of that.
How I work
I own it, whatever it was
Late material, unready crew, missed detail. You will hear what happened and what I am doing about it, not whose fault it was.
A backup before it is needed
Every schedule I write has a second version already in it, because the plan that matters is the one you use when the first one breaks.
No surprises in your own house
You will know what changed the day it changes. Nobody should learn their project slipped by noticing the driveway is empty.
