Before I trained anyone, I spent a long time making the calls myself, and I learned quickly which ones went well and why. It was never the script. The calls that went well were the ones where I was honest about why I was calling, asked a real question, and actually listened to the answer. Homeowners can tell within a few seconds whether someone cares about their house or is just reading lines, and every one of them deserves the first kind of call.
Today I lead the phone team at Hybrid Renovations, and most of my job is teaching that same approach. I train our callers to introduce themselves plainly, to ask what is going on with the house before offering anything, and to take no for an answer the first time. When a homeowner does want a free estimate, we book a time that works for them, confirm it, and make sure they know who is coming and what to expect. I listen to calls, give honest feedback, and hold the team to one simple standard: every homeowner should hang up feeling respected, whether or not they booked anything, and glad they picked up.
