I started on jobsites at 17, carrying shingles up ladders, and worked my way through roofing, framing, and running crews. What I learned is that the work is rarely what goes wrong on a renovation. It is the communication. I learned that standing in a homeowner's kitchen with no good answer for her. The crew had not shown up in four days, she wanted to know why, and nobody had told me either. The materials were fine. The scope was fine. Four people had each assumed somebody else was making the call.
Henry Sheu and I started Hybrid Renovations around the opposite of that. Every homeowner gets one project manager who knows their house and what was promised, from the first estimate to the final walkthrough. Not a call center, not whoever picks up. That rule is also how I hire. I would rather bring on someone who tells you the roof can wait another season than someone who closes every appointment they walk into. I still walk jobs when I can, because you cannot hold a standard from behind a desk. When I am not working I am home with my wife and our three daughters, which is most of why I care how this company treats people.
