Why Homeowners Across LA & Orange County Choose Asphalt Shingles
Asphalt shingles are the most common roof on residential homes across Los Angeles and Orange County, and for good reason. They come in a wide range of colors and styles, today's architectural shingles are built to last for decades, and they deliver strong protection and lasting value. Whether you are replacing an aging roof or installing a new one, a shingle roof is a dependable choice for most homes.
What makes the difference is who installs it. Hybrid Renovations is a local, licensed team that tears off to the deck, builds the roof right, and helps you choose the shingle that fits your home, your style, and how long you plan to stay.

Architectural vs. 3-Tab Shingles
Which Asphalt Shingle Is Right for Your Home?
There are two very different kinds of asphalt shingle, and the choice affects how long your roof lasts, how it holds up to California sun and Santa Ana wind, and how your home looks from the street. Both are asphalt shingles. The difference is how they are built. Here is the honest breakdown so you can decide with confidence.
3-Tab Shingles
Budget pick
Look
Flat and uniform, a clean repeating pattern that lays flush to the roof.
Lifespan
15 to 20 years in Southern California sun.
Wind rating
60 to 70 mph Not offered in Class 4 impact-resistant versions.
Warranty
Typically a 25-year limited warranty. Varies by product.
Upfront Cost
Lower upfront cost.
Best for
A tighter budget, a detached or secondary structure, or matching an existing 3-tab roof.
Architectural Shingles
Recommended
Look
Dimensional and textured, with depth and shadow that can mimic wood shake or slate.
Lifespan
25 to 30 years or more
Wind rating
110 to 130 mph when nailed in the manufacturer's nail zone. Class 4 lines add flexibility against debris and heat cycling.
Warranty
Typically a limited lifetime warranty. Varies by product.
Upfront Cost
Costs more upfront, but the longer lifespan often means a lower cost per year over the life of the roof.
Best for
Most homes. The right call if you plan to stay, want stronger protection, or care about curb appeal and resale value.
Our honest recommendation
For most homes we work on, architectural shingles are the better long-term choice. They last longer, handle California sun and wind far better, and tend to cost less per year over the life of the roof, which is why they now make up the large majority of new roofs. But 3-tab still has its place, and when it is the right fit for your home and budget, we will tell you. We install both, and we help you choose based on your home, not a sales quota.
Asphalt is the most common residential roof in Southern California, and it isn't only because it's the cheapest. Here's the honest case, with the numbers attached.
Color options
Color & Curb Appeal
Your roof is one of the biggest surfaces anyone sees from the street. We've put every one of these on homes in LA and Orange County, and the project pages show how they actually read in daylight.
Sierra Gray
Mojave
Night Sky
Shasta White
130mph
Wind Resistance
Architectural shingles carry 110 to 130 mph wind ratings, but only when they're nailed in the manufacturer's nail zone. Miss that band and the number on the wrapper is fiction.
CRRCrated options
Built for California Sun
Cool-rated lines reflect sunlight instead of soaking it up, which keeps your attic cooler and eases the load on your AC. Some addresses here require a CRRC-rated shingle, and we confirm yours before we order.
25-30years
Built to Last
That's the range for architectural shingles in this climate. Where you land in it is decided by the ventilation underneath and whether the nails hit the zone, not by the color you picked.
2×the lifespan
Value Over Time
Architectural costs more upfront than 3-tab and lasts about twice as long, so it costs roughly half as much per year to own. That's the whole math, and it's why architectural is now the large majority of new roofs.

We Install Every Major Brand. We're Certified in One.
Most roofers put on whatever you pick and hand you the shingle wrapper's warranty. We went deeper on one. Hybrid Renovations is an Owens Corning® Preferred Contractor, which means Owens Corning has vetted our licensing, our insurance, our reputation, and our training, and it means we can register coverage on your roof that an uncertified roofer simply cannot.
Layer 1 · Any brand
The manufacturer's material warranty
Every major brand covers defects in their own product. You get this from any roofer, on any brand we install. It covers the shingle. It does not cover how the shingle went on.
Material
Our workmanship
Manufacturer-backed workmanship
Layer 2 · Every job we do
Our workmanship warranty
Written, on every roof, whatever brand goes on it. If we installed it wrong, we come back and fix it. No argument, one phone number, the same project manager who ran your job.
Material
Our workmanship
Manufacturer-backed workmanship
Layer 3 · Owens Corning only
Manufacturer-backed workmanship
Here's the layer almost nobody has. Because we're a Preferred Contractor, we can register coverage that puts Owens Corning behind the installation too, not just us. Up to 10 years of workmanship coverage available, backed by the manufacturer.
Why that matters: roughly half of roofing companies don't survive five years. Our warranty is only as good as our doors staying open. Theirs isn't.
Material
Our workmanship
Manufacturer-backed workmanship
Seal
Water doesn't get a second chance
Ice and water barrier where roofs actually leak: valleys, eaves, and around every chimney, skylight, and pipe. It self-adheres to the deck and seals around the nails driven through it. Synthetic underlayment covers the rest.
Defend
Built to stay on when the wind comes
TruDefinition® Duration® shingles with patented SureNail® Technology, a woven fabric strip laminated into the nailing zone that delivers 130 mph wind performance. Starter shingles bond the edges down.
Breathe
The part that decides how long it lasts
Balanced intake at the eaves, exhaust at the ridge. A blocked attic in a Whittier August can pass 150°F and cook the seal strips off your shingles from below. Ventilation is also a warranty condition.
That third layer only exists on a complete Owens Corning system, which is why we build the whole roof from their components instead of just their shingles. Every photo above is a Hybrid Renovations roof in Orange County.
Want a different brand? Say so.
We've put GAF, CertainTeed, and Malarkey on roofs across Los Angeles and Orange County, and the project pages on this site prove it. Every one of them carries its manufacturer's material warranty and our workmanship warranty. What changes is that third layer.
We'll walk you through exactly what you get with each one at your free estimate, in person, before you decide anything. We'd rather you pick with real information than have us pick for you.
How We Install Your Asphalt Shingle Roof, the Right Way
An asphalt shingle roof is a complete system, not just the shingles you see. The difference between a roof that lasts 15 years and one that lasts 30 comes down to the layers underneath and how carefully they go on. We install every roof to the manufacturer's spec, which is also what keeps your warranty valid.

1
Protection goes down before anything comes off
Landscaping covered, AC condenser and windows shielded, debris containment set, before a single shingle moves.
2
Everything comes off, down to bare wood
No layering over what's already up there. An overlay hides whatever the wood is doing and can void your warranty before the first rain.
3
We show you the wood before we replace it
Every contract carries a wood allowance. Anything past it is $36 per linear foot, printed on the agreement you already signed.
4
The layers you'll never see again
Eave drip edge under, leak barrier that seals around every nail, synthetic underlayment, rake drip edge over. That order is how water leaves your roof.
5
Nailed where the manufacturer says
Starter strips so the edge bonds instead of lifting, then every shingle in the nail zone. That band is what the 130 mph rating was tested on.
6
Finished at the ridge, then swept clean
Purpose-made ridge cap over continuous ventilation. Cut field shingles crack and blow off, so we don't use them there. Then a magnet across the property.
The work you can't see is where roofs are won or lost
Most of what makes a shingle roof last is hidden once the shingles are on, the nailing, the starter strips, the leak barrier, the ventilation. That is exactly where we do not cut corners, and why our roofs hold up and stay under warranty.

Your Shingle Warranty Is Only as Good as the Ventilation Under It
A hot, blocked attic can climb past 150°F and slowly bakes your shingles from below, breaking down the seal strips that hold your wind rating and taking years off the roof's life. Every major manufacturer lists proper attic ventilation as a warranty condition, and checks for it before paying a claim. We assess and correct it as part of every roof, never as an upsell.

“I was hesitant to begin as significant a project as completely re-roofing my home and was worried about the possibility of over-costing, contractor abandonment, or price gouging mid-project. After walking through the project with two of the team leaders at Hybrid Renovations, who later spent the evening with my family to talk through any and all questions I had, I felt ready to commit to the investment. And I'm so glad I did. From the workers to each of the team leaders, everyone was friendly, highly communicative, flexible, and incredibly helpful. I noticed areas that had been addressed that were not initially included in the pricing, as well as a particular repair to my fence that was done well beyond my expectations when I discovered it. I would work with Hybrid Renovations again for another large-scale project and recommend them to others looking for assistance and incredibly well-done, professional work.”

What's the difference between architectural and 3-tab asphalt shingles?
This is the choice most homeowners don't realize they're making, and it matters more than color or brand. 3-tab shingles are a single flat layer with a uniform look, and they typically last 15 to 20 years with a wind rating around 60 to 70 mph. Architectural shingles (also called dimensional or laminated) are built from two bonded layers, which gives them a thicker, textured look and much stronger performance: 25 to 30 years or more, with wind ratings up to 110 to 130 mph. Architectural shingles now make up the large majority of new roofs for good reason. During your free estimate we show you both and explain the trade-offs for your home. We install both, and we help you choose based on your home, not a sales quota.
How long does an asphalt shingle roof last?
It depends on the shingle and, just as much, on how it's installed and ventilated. A 3-tab roof generally lasts 15 to 20 years, while architectural shingles last 25 to 30 years or more. The catch is that the rating on the package assumes a correct installation and a properly ventilated attic. Manufacturers specify a narrow nailing band, and the wind rating on the wrapper was tested with nails in it. Miss that band, or trap heat underneath, and the roof can fail years early no matter how good the shingle is. We install to each manufacturer's spec and correct ventilation as part of the job, which is what actually gets you the lifespan you paid for.
Are asphalt shingles a good choice for the California heat and sun?
Yes, and they're the most popular roofing choice in California for a reason: a strong balance of cost, durability, and curb appeal. The key here is choosing the right shingle. California's intense sun and UV exposure are hard on roofs, so we install cool-rated shingle lines that reflect heat rather than absorb it, which helps keep your attic cooler, eases the load on your HVAC, and can lower summer cooling costs. Thanks to newer granule technology, you no longer have to pick a light color to get that reflectivity, even deep charcoal is available in cool-rated options.
Does my new roof have to meet California's Title 24 cool roof requirement?
Sometimes, and it depends on your exact address and your roof. California assigns every property to one of 16 climate zones, and LA and Orange County span several of them, so two homes ten miles apart can land under different rules. Slope matters too: low-slope and flat roofs face cool roof requirements statewide, while steep-slope requirements apply only in certain zones. The requirement generally kicks in when you replace 50% or more of the roof, and even then there are compliance paths besides the shingle itself, including an attic radiant barrier or added ceiling insulation. This is exactly the kind of thing that stalls a final inspection when a contractor guesses. We confirm your zone with the building department before we order material, pull the permit, and pick the path that fits your roof.
Can you install new shingles over my old roof, or do you tear it off?
We tear off to the deck. Layering new shingles over old ones (an overlay) can look cheaper upfront, but it hides whatever is happening to the wood underneath, adds weight, shortens the new roof's life, and can void your manufacturer warranty. Building codes also limit how many layers a roof can have. By stripping to the deck, we can inspect and repair the wood, install a proper leak barrier and underlayment, and give you a roof that performs and stays under warranty. You only pay for the deck repairs your roof actually needs, and we show you anything we find.
How long does it take to replace an asphalt shingle roof?
Most residential shingle roofs are finished in one to three days. The exact time depends on the size and pitch of your roof, how complex the rooflines are, the material you choose, and the weather. If we find deck damage once the old roof is off, repairing it can add a little time, but you'll know before we start what to expect, and a dedicated project manager keeps you updated through every step so nothing catches you off guard.
Do asphalt shingles come with a warranty?
Yes, and there are two layers of protection on every roof we do. The shingles carry their own manufacturer warranty, and our installation is backed by our workmanship warranty. The detail most homeowners miss: manufacturer warranties depend on correct installation and proper attic ventilation, so a cheap install can quietly void the long warranty you were promised. There's also a third layer most roofers can't offer. As an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor, we can register coverage that puts Owens Corning behind the installation too, not just us. We'll walk you through what's available for your roof at your free estimate.
How much does a new asphalt shingle roof cost?
Most shingle roofs we replace in LA and Orange County run $9 to $13 per square foot, tear-off included. Roofs are measured in squares, one square being 100 square feet, and most single-story homes here are 18 to 25 squares. A typical 20-square ranch with one layer coming off and a sound deck lands around $20,000 to $24,000.
What moves it: roof size, how many old layers come off, pitch, deck condition, and whether your address requires a cool-rated shingle.
Deck repairs are where most surprises happen, so here's our number. Every contract includes a wood allowance. Anything past it is $36 per linear foot, it's printed on the agreement you sign, and we show you the wood before we replace it.
If your budget is well under that range, say so on the call and we'll be straight about whether we're a fit.
How much can a roofing contractor ask for upfront in California?
By law, not much. On a home improvement contract in California, the down payment may not exceed $1,000 or 10% of the contract price, whichever is less. It's on our agreement in writing, and it's on every legitimate contractor's. If someone asks for a third up front to order materials, that's the moment to stop and check their license at cslb.ca.gov. Deck repairs are the other place surprises live, so here's our number: every contract carries a wood allowance, and anything past it is $36 per linear foot, printed on the agreement before you sign. We show you the bad wood before it comes out.
